Goal setting for long term results
Step One: Set the goals
Take some time to truly think through what goals you have for yourself this year. Think through what is possible, what you need in order to complete these goals, and the ‘why’ behind them.
There are many things in life that are simply not going away. For most of us, we have to keep working. We need to spend quality time with our people. We need to eat food.
So, setting a goal like “I want to spend 3 hours at the gym every day” might not be attainable if you have a few toddlers running around and work a full-time job.
Step Two: Prioritize your goals
The following principles may be helpful in achieving those goals.
Principle 1: Focus on one goal at a time
Like with most things, we are better able to get something done if it is the only thing we’re focused on. It is difficult to have a meaningful conversation with someone while you’re looking at your phone and watching a show.
We have to eliminate distractions.
One way to do this when it comes to goal setting is to focus on one goal at a time.
Principle 2: Get specific
Instead of having the goal “Drink more water” try getting specific: “Before I drink my morning coffee, I will drink 12 ounces of water.”
Instead of “Eat better,” try “I will research and try one new, healthy recipe every Wednesday.”
Setting specific goals that are achievable and have timing planned out will help you to truly reach them.
Principle 3: Show Up
Don’t forget that, especially in the beginning, simply showing up and trying is the biggest thing you can do to move towards your goal. You won’t be perfect. You don’t need to achieve your goal on the first day.
That’s the beauty of doing this exercise. You take the time and space to think through what you truly want to accomplish and then move forward, towards that goal with purpose.
