The dark side of satisfying your sweet tooth at any cost
Historically, artificial sweetener products have been called a ‘magic sweetener’ where you can attain the bliss of your out of control appetite with no consequences. Unfortunately, there are no such things as “no consequences.”
Eat to your heart’s content with ‘zero calories’ and never suspect that there’s a payment somewhere in your future… It’s a bit misguided.
The power of taste overrides the will, and food companies know it!
If I can get you hooked by using taste, then I’ve got you. Most of the artificial sweeteners are that way. Like heroin or meth, once you taste it, you’re hooked. It’s almost an addiction problem in many cases.
This power is so strong that people are unable to make a decent decision after they’re hooked. Their body begins the slow, painful price of addiction.
These food companies already know that that is the reaction that you’ll have… every time.
In a study conducted in 2007, scientists gave rats a choice between aspartame (the sweetener in Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi) and cocaine. We know that cocaine is one of the most addictive illegal drugs of the last century that hundreds of thousands of people have died for trying to use it, attain it, and sell it, even risking time in prison. Scientists tested the two substances to see which was more addictive.
The rats, to everyone’s surprise, chose aspartame.
Not only that, they kept upping the amount of cocaine offered to change their behavior and the rats still chose the aspartame.
How’s that for amazing?
It is no wonder that once a person starts on diet soda, they have a tough time coping with the idea of getting off it. I’ve actually had people stand up in my office and walk right out the front door at my clinic when I tell them that they must get diet drinks out of their lives.
“How can that be a problem? There’s no sugar in it and it has no calories?”
Exactly! You should have an alarm go off whenever you come across something that has uncommon sweetness and yet has no calories.
The Taste is Chemical and Yet It’s Sweet!?
You may not realize this but most of these chemicals are up to 13,000 times as sweet as sugar. That’s right! They have to cut the chemical sweeteners with fillers just to make them tolerable enough to swallow.
Your body has a tremendously tough time coping with such sweetness and through its confusion, has no option but to release insulin in such high quantities that that action begins to create a metabolic exhaustion that it doesn’t even recognize that it’s in. It just knows that it has to have more and the pancreas obeys the orders from the brain and keeps pumping out more and more insulin. This causes stress which leads to stress eating which leads to obesity.
So… artificial sweeteners make you highly susceptible to becoming overweight.
You may not have noticed this but many people that are addicted to diet drinks are overweight. Some are even obese. The combination of marketing and taste has poisoned an entire generation into thinking that it’s “ok” to drink and eat products with these chemicals in them, with the idea that if it says that there are “no calories in this product”, it must be good.
“If it tastes this awesome… why not drink and eat as much as my heart desires?”
All the while… we get bigger and bigger.
